Prevention..mmm.. yes. look what happened to the US.. they did not predict and thier assumption is wrong. So what u gotta do is source out every possible scenario and work out all the contingency plans. For me, there are 3 meanings:

1. I want to think about us, where we're heading, & if I still want to be together with that person, then I want to think of how I can make it work.

2. I need time to cool off, too angry now, & if you talk to me 1 more time, I'm gonna scream!

3. I want to cool things off between us before dropping the final blow.

It can still means more than just that? Though I would generally agree with you that most of the time in such cases, something might seems amiss..?

But at other times, the other party might really just need a short break? So in such interpretations, it's really quite meaningless to say IF A happens B happening. Often than not, not an absolute case.

I've known some couples who just need some time from each other once in a while.. Some of them might even appear suddenly distant to the other or show signs of total no interest at all.. But only those couples themselves know and understand that it's normal for them. They just accept things the way it is, and they actually get along pretty fine that way?

From my own view, if I said that "I just simply means I like some time with myself". Even guys need that too. Not only just with our partners. With whomever. I think if we get too much of the same person, some kind of "sian" feelings begin to evolve. So rather quality time than quantity.
